This was a relatively modest task, exceptional not because of its size but because of the demanding brief to alter one storey in Pavilion A and turn it into a Gynaecology and Maternity Unit. With a suitable layout, furnishing and colour design, the resulting alteration provides a pleasant environment for patients and healthcare staff, and complies with the latest requirements for the provision of gynaecological and maternity care while creating high-standard sanitary and spatial conditions. The project design and construction works had accommodate the requirement that the construction works be carried out without significantly disrupting operations in the remaining sections of the building and without affecting the quality of the completed work. In this respect the most demanding tasks were the installation of technical systems and alterations to the load-bearing structure to create a new oriel window allowing the extension of wards in one part of the building. The unit now has two- and three-bed rooms with sanitary facilities and two intensive care rooms, together with a section for new-born babies. The interior design creates a pleasant, homely environment in the spacious maternity rooms where expecting mothers spend time before delivery.
