In the first stage of the development project, a new multi-purpose commercial and entertainment centre will be completed in the centre of the city of Ostrava. The location and basic layout of the structure, clearly reflecting urban planning requirements, are specified in the client’s design concept study, which was developed in cooperation with Helika and which won a tender for the design of the area. The Dutch architectural practice OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) was selected as the concept architect, with Prof. F. Alkemade leading the design project management. Collaborating with a world famous architectural practice, which is what OMA undoubtedly is, was for Helika’s design team a unique experience that no architectural practice in the Czech Republic ever had. From regular consultations discussing particular aspects of the design to presentations of design proposals Ostrava City Authority representatives, Helika’s architects had an excellent opportunity to be involved in an exceptional project. The multi-purpose centre is a dynamic composition of rectangular forms with solid and glazed areas irregularly spaced on the facades. The interior of the centre was conceived as a single continuous space extending through all floor levels of the building.
